PROJECT 1

Project 1 is 20% and is divided in 2 parts. Below are the details, project updates and developments of the projects in 2 parts.

PROJECT 1A

Project 1A was a group project and I was in Group 2- Art and culture, and was assigned to be the group leader. We were to visit the space and observe the space, environment, surrounding, people, behaviour and the shop lots.

For the project requirement, we were required to do an A1 size board on our research and also an video on all or findings which later on would be compiled into a group video with all the other groups.

I was also solely in charge of compiling all the other groups videos into one for the final presentation day.

Final Project Outcome
WhatsApp Image 2019-05-29 at 03.30.40.jp

This was our final outcome of the project 1A which we presented. There is a rotating base in the middle of the board showing the day life and the night life of the Row. The board is also split into half, left side being the day/ positive side of the site, whereas the right side being the night/negative side of the row. Even the topic (which is the big circle in the middle) is dived in half. one part being sun, the other being the moon. The purpose of splitting the events in such a way was to showcase the drastic difference and to play with duality of the place. The bar chart also shows the behavior, age group, rush, activities of the people and how different it is during different times of the day.

Art and Culture research video
Group video compilation
Reflection

Project 1A was a project that the whole class had to contribute to, to make one whole full research on the site we were given. It was my first time working on a project of this sort but it was surely exciting. I was in the Group for Art and Culture of the Row. So on the main site visit day, we had more work to do outside the actual space than on the inside. So we around the whole road, on each side, taking pictures, videos of the shop lots, the people, the clubs, Sheraton hotel, the LRT station, the traffic and the mall that was opposite to the road where the Row is situated. We interview some people there, some were the office workers who were out on their lunch break while others were the cafe managers or owners. We came back at the site on a different day and stayed there spying and observing the people around us from evening till after midnight. We even took the liberty to enter some of the night clubs that are situated further down the road, and had come across some unfortunate events which are all documented and explained in the videos above. After all the first hand observing, we did some background research on the Row's history, and some pretty scary incidents came up which were mentioned on the A1 board. The Project was not hard to do, but my group was a little too ambitious and hence there were a lot of things we had to rush to get everything done before the presentation day. Nevertheless we did get everything up. Everyone in the group had to do their own part in the project as the group work was pre divided to avoid chaos afterwards, but for some reasons some of the group memebers could not keep up with the work pace and we were falling behind, which is why as a group leader I had to step in and work and help out in parts I was not supposed to do. Even after all that I had to do the Video editing of our group and the whole class's video compilation as no one else in my group knew how to. My workload had increased significantly but at the end we all did finish it and I was quiet happy with the outcome.

PROJECT 1B

The second part of the project, Project 1B was an individual project that is actually not in relation to project 1A but it will come into play later on in the Final Project.

This Project is an Info graphic on our OBSESSION. Which we will have to do a extensive research on and then display it on an A2 size board. This was the remaining 10% of the Project 1.

The above to boards were sample board and was entirely being done on Photoshop, but making the hair extend was taking longer than I expected and it was messy and was not what I had envisioned for the board to be like. Which is why, as seen on the left, I drew it out on an A3 size paper and then scanned it onto my board where i proceeded to color each strand on Photoshop.

Reflection

For this project, we were to choose that one thing that we as individuals were literally obsessed with and so we would be able to research and showcase that obsession clearly on the presentation board. So I decided to do it on HAIR DYE. My obsession with hair coloring started when I was 12. I have always seen my mom color her hair different shades of red since I was young, and I found it very fascinating. I dyed my hair for the first time when i was 12 years old. Ever since then I have dyed it from time to time but it was always natural shades, nothing too bright or colorful. Until I moved here to Malaysia, and since then I have had, Purple, pink, red, green, rose gold and blonde hair. But for my project I focused more on natural hair dyes that we can directly get from the nature, rather than the harmful chemical box dyes or developers and bleaches. But what I had envisioned for my board to showcase, I could not portray that properly. It did not come out as I wanted at all and I was not happy with the board. But I managed to rush it and get it up for the Crit session Day.

PROJECT 2

Project 2 is about making an computational model out of a post apocalyptic story that we have to create.

The requirements are 1 A3 size abstract model inspired from the story we have created, and 1 A1 size presentation board with our story line and the design development of the model.

This board was inspired by some sample boards I found on pinterest. And upon searching how to show design developments steps, I stumbled upon some car design development proposals, from which I took Que and arranged the right side of the board which is the Design Development of my abstract model. The Left side is dominated by my storyboard and the reason is that my storyboard was quite detailed and I wanted to showcase that part, and I also wanted to include dialogue boxes and short explanations as to what is going on in that specific scene for better understanding of my story. As it is an unique story about cockroaches being the reason behind the apocalypse. Also I introduced a color into board and integrated it into my model too, because I believe a pop of color makes everything more interesting and highlights the more important parts and gives the whole project more character.

Reflection

For this project, I wanted to create a story that was not natural but still plausible. After a lot of consideration of all my options, I went with the cannibal cockroach story because it seemed like it would make an interesting storyboard. After the storyboard was completed, I had to choose keywords, based on which I would create my model. I ended up choosing 5 keywords and based on those each word, I tried deriving an abstract design from each and then combined each of those derived abstract design into one model. And since the lecturers liked my prototype, and I felt like wire art creates the most abstract art pieces, I decided my main material to me metals and wires. After the design process was done, I started to recreate the proposal out of wires and tried to construct it as similar as possible to the drawing. I even tried to make the abstract wire cockroaches move around to give the crawling feeling. To do that I installed a toy train under the base with magnet stuck on top, so that it attracts the metal mesh and moves it around as the train moves around too.

PROJECT 3/FINAL PROJECT

For this project, we have to create a space that is situated in the Slate, The Row. We had two option, to either continue with our research from project 1b or make a space from a completely different new research. And I choose the later one. So I had the idea of creating a space for like Art therapy, but with a fun twist of body painting.

So upon my research, I found out about paint slip and slide, and sip and paint, so I focused my project on these two particular events.

Reflection

Overall, this project was not that easy to do and it was quite challenging. But I have tried my best to create a space that I had envisioned, and as I proceeded further and further into the project, the more the ideas and design got refined, Thanks to my lecturers.

This was the first time we all had to work on an actual space rather than creating the space to be in harmony with our ideas, which was probably the hardest and also the easiest part of the project. But once the floor plan and the design idea for the major space specifically is done, it's pretty easy sailing from there on. And having rendered pictures and creating an 3D model enables ourselves and others to see our vision come to life in a way, which was probably the most exciting part.

I have learned alot from this project and hopefully will be able to do even better in the upcoming semesters with all the lessons learned from this.
