Vormator Challenge

original_vormator_elements-page-001.jpg

There 8 shapes were provided, and the challenge was to create a game character by using these shapes only. We were allowed to use as many or as few of these shapes for the assignment. It was allowed to merge or group the shapes together, but skewing was not allowed.

At first my idea was create a human like character, as it can be see, the shapes have been merged and grouped to create this cute short girl. This was done in Photoshop.

I tried to be more experimental and create an unusual creature out of simple shapes without having to merge them. Anime pets were my inspiration behind this experiment. I tried to use different colors and facial expressions to give them more character. This was also done using photoshop.

I was not content with my previous experiments, so decided to try more options, The drop and the tentacle shapes drew me in the most, because I felt they could be use to make the perfect fire shape. Hence came the idea to create a fire lady. I tried to play around with gradients to give the shadow effect in some places. This was also done in photoshop.

When searching for inspiration in Pinterest, the most common style was the pastel colors and boho style of drawings. I decided to try creating one, I did like this one finally, but it did not give me a trading card game character vibe.

And then I came across this picture in pinterest, this had my intitial idea of creating a human character, but it also had the odd shape and had a kind of avant-garde feel to it.

I took inspiration from the picture and tried recreating it with the shapes provided. And at last I came up with a character fit enough to be a game character. But I still was not sure about it's background story, or what color should be used. I tried out a few color themes and different facial expressions to see which one spoke to me the most.

My color study was based on this picture. there was no actual shading, but rather gradients to create an illusion. It was has a similar color pallet as my initial character done in photoshop.

I traced my photoshop file in Illustrator by using the curve tool. And the colored it in using the gradient tool.

Next step was to add in the dress details, hands and face. The body features were also traced and colored using the gradient tool.

Next I traced the hair shape using curve tool, then did a black and red gradient. But it seemed to miss the depth and texture of a hair, which is when I used the slide tool on the space, and these beautiful hair strand type depth coming in. Since the gradient was already applied to the shape, some parts or the hair naturally took this rolled curled hair effect, I had to adjust some of them to match the rest and create the beautiful long hair.

The facial features were drawn using the paint brush tool, as it can be seen, the multiple brush strokes to color in the lips.

The weapons' shaft was also created in the same way as the hair. This gave the shaft more depth and texture.

Creating the Ruby was the most challenging thing I faced in the exercise. I used this picture on the left as a reference on how I should slice the tear drop shape. Each triangle was then individually colored by either a solid color or a gradient. Each triangle also has a different color gradient to give it a more realistic look.

The completed ruby. It looked too pretty to not use it more in the character. Hence I created a simple ruby crown by using this same ruby after it was grouped together.

This is my final completed vormator character. The facial expression along with the clothing style gave me vibe of empress or queen of some sorts with powers that are held by the ruby sword.

I decided to name it "Demander of souls" a person who holds the evil power but only uses it to punish people who deserve it.

Tanzina Kabir Parisa- 0331525 character.

I used this trading card design for my inspiration and tried to create a similar one in Illustrator itself.  The final outcome is shown below.

But due to low grades, I decided to resubmit. I changed the background and the trading card template. The background was done using photoshop and illustrator. And the Card design was created by using photoshop.
